Attorney Adam Stone of Bucyrus criminal defense firm Eyer Stone, LTD will be a guest speaker at an upcoming webinar presented by The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice & Disability (NCCJD) regarding the emergence and effectiveness of mental health courts. Held on July 28th, 2016 from 2:00-3:00 EDT, Attorney Stone will address the practical challenges affecting mental health courts in Ohio and will discuss whether they are adequate to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is estimated that more than 200 lawyers from across the country will be in attendance.
Mental health courts were created as a means of helping mentally ill and disabled individuals accused of crimes avoid prison time through participation in long-term, community-based treatment. While the intent of these courts is to address the mental needs of offenders and protect the safety of the community, their effectiveness has been questioned – with some asserting that they could be doing more harm than good. The NCCJD’s seminar will explore this largely ignored issue within the criminal justice system and feature opinions from experts involved in this area.
