Bond Has Been Set for Crawford County Man Accused of Raping Infant

by | Jan 2, 2018 | Criminal Defense

Adam Gunter of Crawford County has been charged with the rape of an infant and bond has been set for his case. The infant victim was examined at Galion Hospital, where medical teams discovered burn marks on its neck and oral damage. Further testing found the child is positive for gonorrhea, which is believed to have been transferred by Gunter during the illegal sexual act or acts.

Attorney Adam Stone of Eyer Stone, LTD has been appointed under the court’s direction to act as Gunter’s criminal defense attorney for the case. In light of a possible life sentence without the chance of parole upon conviction, Attorney Stone has argued that Gunter is mentally incompetent and unable to fully grasp both the context of the case and the consequences of the alleged actions. He has requested that Gunter’s mother, who has been officially assigned as his guardian, should be present for all stages of the case. As a preliminary step of defense, Attorney Stone has informed Gunter to not respond to questions or prompts during pretrial phases.

The case has been complicated, however, by the fact that Gunter’s mother is his guardian but filed for a protective order against him. The mother of the infant also filed for a protective order at the same time, possibly fearing for her own safety as well as that of the infant child. Without a reliable guardian in place, the competency of Gunter is further brought into question. In order to determine how the case should proceed, Gunter has been approved to be submitted to a competency hearing.

After Crawford County Attorney Prosecutor Matt Crall attempted to block any bond for Gunter, Attorney Stone was able to negotiate with Crall and the presiding judge. The bond has been set at $500,000 in cash.
